The Battle of Gagron was fought between Rajput army led by Rana Sanga (Maharana Sangram Singh) and Sultanate army led by Sultan Mahmud (Shihab-ud-Din Mahmud Shah II or Sultan Mahmud Khilji II) of Malwa. The battle was fought in the year 1519 A.D.

Background

A battle was fought between Rana Sanga and Sultan of Delhi Ibrahim Lodi at Dholpur (Battle of Dholpur) in 1519 A.D. In this fierce battle Sultan was defeated. With this defeat the territories acquired by Sultan Sikander Lodi, father of Sultan Ibrahim Lodi fell into the hands of the Rana Snaga, following the victory he captured most of the parts of present day Rajasthan. Chanderi was one of the territories which fell into the hands of the Rana Sanga, which was granted to Medini Rai (lieutenant of Rana Sanga) as a fief for his contribution in the battle.
The Sultan Mahmud of Malwa intruded on Chanderi. Rana Sanga came across this news and marched against the Sultan Mahmud to teach him a lesson.

Battle

Rana Sanga was Reinforced by the Rathors of Merta under Rao Viramdeva. Sultan Mahmud Khilji II was accompanied by the Gujarat auxiliaries under Asaf Khan. Rana Sanga advanced with a large army from Chittor and met Sultan Mahmud at Gargon.
As soon as the battle started the a fierce charge was made by Rajput Cavalry and tore through the Gujarat Cavalry, the few remnants that survived fled in every direction that they could find. Asaf Khan's son was killed, and Asaf Khan himself sought safety in flight. The Rajput cavalry after routing the Gujarat auxiliaries turned towards the Malwa(Sultan’s) forces. The Sultan's forces fought bravely but could not withstand the furious charge of the Rajput cavalry and sustained a complete defeat. Most of the Sultan’s officers were killed and the army was completely destroyed. Sultan Mahmud was trounced (wounded and bleeding )and taken prisoner.
The first major battle of Rana Sanga was the “Battle of Gagron” in 1519, with Sultan Mahmood of Malwa. Sultan Mahmud (Shihab-ud-Din Mahmud Shah II) was trounced and taken prisoner in the war. Rana Sanga extended traditional chivalry and benevolence to him. Sultan Mahmud was treated like a guest and his kingdom was restored to him by the Rana.

After the battle

With traditional Rajput Magnanimity and benevolence, Rana Sanga treated Sultan with honor and on a condition of subjugation Rana Sanga restored Sultan his kingdom. A jeweled crown and belt left as a family heirloom by Sultan Hoshang Shah, the first king of Malwa was given to Rana Sanga as a ransom by Sultan Mahmud.

According to Ferishta the conduct of Rana Sanga may illustrate the chivalrous character of the Rajputs. "His (Sultan Mahmud) Enemy Rana Sanga of Chittor, caused him to be bought into his own tent, dressed his wounds, attended him in person, and showed him every mark of attention; and after his recovery, furnished him with an escort of one thousand Rajput horse, who conducted him back to Mandu, where he resumed the reins of government".
