Sisunaga Dynasty (1984-1616 BCE)
Pradyota
rulers of Avanti, who were counterparts of the five Bimbisariyans of Magadha, were
seems to have fallen roughly in the period 1984 BCE. Not with standing amid the
rule of Nandivardhana, the customary threatening vibe proceeded amongst Avanti
and Magadha. The Jain texts were silent about the successors of Pradyota
dynasty. However some texts depict that Nandivardhana was vanquished by
Sisunaga, who is acting as Magadhan Viceroy at Benares. After destructing
Pradyota dynasty Sisunaga established Sisunaga Dynasty.
Shishunaga dynasty and its rulers
Sisunaga dynasty
was ruled for 366 years. The first king of dynasty is Sisunaga. His son will be
Kakavarna, his son will be Vidmisara, his son will be Ajatasatru, his son will
also be Nandivardhana and his son will be Mahananda.
Avanti after the fall of Pradyota Dynasty
After the
defeat of Nandhivardhana, Avanti was incorporated with the growing kingdoms of
Magadha. Sisunaga appointed his son as in charge of Varanasi against both
Kosala and Avanti. Avanti continued under the possession of the Nandas when
they became the rulers of Magadha. Avanti remained as one of the provinces of
the Mauryan Empire, with its capital Ujjain, as the seat of Mauryan empire.
Downfall of Sisunaga Dynasty
The Sisunaga
dynasty continued to rule the kingdom till 1616 BCE. In this year the reigning
emperor of the Sisunaga dynasty was Mahananda. He was killed by Nanda. Nanda
usurped the throne and founded the Nanda Dynasty.
