Shatadhanvan Maurya - Second last ruler of Mauryan dynasty




Shatadhanvan or Shatadhanus was one of the last rulers of Mauryan dynasty, which was founded by one of the greatest rulers of Indian history, Chandragupta Maurya and reached to peaks in the hands of Bindusara and Ashoka the king. Shatadhanvan ruled for almost eight years from 195 B.C.E. to 187 B.C.E., according to Puranas.(1313 to 1305 B.C.E as per new translations)



The great Mauryan dynasty, which rose to peak of its glory during the time of great kings like Chandragupta Maurya, Bindusara, Ashoka and a intelligent minister like Chanakya or Kautilya, who was a gift to Mauryan dynasty at the beginning of empire, who was a minister for Chandragupta Maurya and also to Bindusara. But after the end of those great rulers, the downfall of Mauryan empire started because of inability of successor kings and eventually collapsed.



Shatadhanvan was the second last ruler of the Mauryan dynasty. According to Puranas, he succeeded Devavarman Maurya. During his rule, the empire lost some of its territories because of invasions from outside as well as from neighbouring kingdoms. According to some scripts he was believed to be the son of Devavarman Maurya. Shatadhanvan Maurya was succeeded by Brihadratha Maurya.
